Yanitsa Fendulova
Born 1992, Burgas. Based in Sofia, Bulgaria
Yanitsa Fendulova is a visual artist working with objects, photography, drawings, found images and texts in terms of installation, artistic book or performance acts. Fendulova is interested in visual storytelling, space narratives and their related routines. The works are developed in series, focusing on process-oriented or project-driven approaches.
Her artistic practice often refers to a specific site, or is linked to a particular issue. Recurring topics include religious mind, cultural heritage, femininity and popular iconography, engaging identity reflection and personal histories. Notable projects are the “HI-AI Diversion Chains” series (2023-ongoing) – approaching the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Holy Trinity and contemporary religious fanatism; and “Detritus” (2016-2023) – a long-term investigative artist run project, which is recognized for its historical contributions to the 19th-century issue of “Yonov Inn” in Veliko Tarnovo (BG).
She studied Fine Arts in Kazanlak Art School, majored Painting and Sculpture in Veliko Tarnovo University, Bulgaria. During studies she specializes arts in Spain, France and Hungary (2013-2017). In the period 2019 – 2022, Fendulova is a PhD Student at the same university, researching the topic “Performance and performativity in art – performative installation”, defended in 2023. Her artistic interests and main art theory contributions are grounded in installation art practices, situational aesthetics and receptive aesthetics. As both an artist and scholar, Fendulova is developing a hybrid contemporary artistic practice.
Fendulova has participated in group exhibitions and art residencies in Bulgaria, Romania, and South Korea. Fendulova was an official representative of Duppini Art Group (Bulgaria) for numerous international projects due membership (2014-2023). She works on curatorial concepts, articles and exhibition reviews.
